Extreme tourism is part of the Icelandic experience but has been quite challenging. Glaciers are particularly precarious and tragic accident happened a short while ago on Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. An overhanging ice shelf broke and it was believed that a number of people had been trapped under the ice. In their lecture, Freyr Ingi and Sigurður Bjarki describe the challenging work on site.
Sigurður Bjargi is a rapid reponse mountain rescuer from Hjálparsveit Skáta í Kópavogi and also a part time firefighter in the South of Iceland. He worked for a decade as a mountain guide and gained there significant mountaineering experience. Sigurður Bjarki was amoung the first wave of rescuers that came to aid the local rescue teams in Öræfin and Höfn.
Freyr Ingi Björnsson is the head instructer in mountaineering with ICE-SAR's Rescue School.
