Icelandic Coast Guard helicopters often operate jointly with terrestrial rescue units on SAR missions. Assumptions are sometimes made on helicopter capabilities based on experience from how terrain, weather and sustainability affect ground vehicles but are not applicable to helicopters. Therefore we will cover some capabilities and limitations of ICG helicopters on joint operations. Examples will be taken from real operations to better explain this difference. We will also cover crew composition, aircraft type, current mission trends and changes in the next few years.
Kolbeinn is a rescue man/rescue swimmer, medic and navigation officer aboard ICG helicopters and previously a navigation officer aboard ICG vessels around Iceland and in Frontex operations in the Mediterranean sea.
