Vídir Reynisson is General Director of Iceland's Civil Protection and Emergency Management. Vidir s background is in Search and Rescue (SAR) and police, ranging from field searches for missing persons to command and control of SAR operations.
Víðir has participated in commanding a number of large operations such as the response in 1995 two avalanches in north-west Iceland that killed 40 people and left many more homeless and two earthquakes in 2000 and 2008 which caused extensive injuries, wreaked havoc on hundreds of homes and left thousands in fear.
Volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull 2010, Grímsvötn 2011, Bárðabunga 2014 and Reykjanes 2021-2022. Vidir has played a leading role in the process of re-building the stricken society in the aftermath. He has been active in the EU, NATO, EFTA and UN civil protection arena both on strategy and operational level.
Volcanic activity at the Reykjanes peninsula has demanded co-operation between numerous entities and complex decision making on all levels of government. The lecture focuses on the overlap of responsibility between officials and private entities and a new approach was needed in crisis management. The lecture will focus on knowledge gained in the last few months and how that will be reflected in the organisation of the Civil defence department of the National Police
After Kevin's presentation, a panel of experts will discuss the challenges associated with large, complex, and long-term operations. The panelists include Víðir Reynisson, Head of Iceland Civil Protection; Friðfinnur Freyr Guðmundsson, Head of ICE-SAR National Command; and Zuzana Stanton-Geddes, Disaster Risk Management Specialist from the World Bank. The discussion will be moderated by Guðbrandur Örn Arnarson, ICE-SAR Project Manager for Search and Rescue.
